Electric bikes — same sizing, different feel

Electric bikes (e-bikes) use the same frame sizing system as traditional bikes — inches for e-MTB and centimetres for e-road. However, the addition of a motor (2-4 kg) and battery (3-6 kg) adds 7-10 kg of extra weight, which changes how the bike handles and how the rider positions themselves. A properly sized e-bike should feel planted and stable, not sluggish.

3 key differences for e-bike sizing

  • Weight distribution: the motor (usually at the bottom bracket) and battery (on the downtube or rear rack) lower the centre of gravity. This makes e-bikes more stable in a straight line but requires more effort to change direction.
  • Riding position: many e-bike riders prefer a slightly more upright position. The extra weight makes holding an aggressive aero position more tiring over long distances.
  • Test ride is essential: with e-bikes, the feel matters more than the numbers. The same nominal size can feel very different due to motor placement and battery integration.

Common mistakes when choosing an e-bike size

  • Treating e-bike sizing exactly like a regular bike. The motor and battery add 7-10 kg. This extra weight changes how the bike handles at low speed, when mounting and dismounting, and when manoeuvring. A frame that feels fine unpowered may feel unwieldy with the added weight.
  • Ignoring standover height with the battery. Some e-bikes have batteries mounted on the downtube, which can reduce standover clearance. Ensure you have at least 3-5 cm of clearance when standing over the bike with the battery installed.
  • Choosing based on unpowered test rides. An e-bike feels very different with the motor on versus off. Always test ride with the assistance turned on, in different modes (Eco, Trail, Boost) to feel how the bike handles with power.
  • Not considering the bike's total weight for transport. At 20-28 kg, an e-bike is significantly harder to lift onto a car rack, carry up stairs, or manoeuvre through tight spaces. Make sure you can handle the weight in your everyday use.

E-bike sizing FAQ

Q: Is the sizing formula the same for e-bikes?
A: Yes — the formulas (inseam × 0.22 for e-MTB, inseam × 0.65 for e-road) are the same. However, due to the extra weight, many riders prefer a slightly smaller frame for better control, or a slightly more upright position for comfort on longer rides.

Q: Do I need a different size for an e-MTB versus a regular MTB?
A: The nominal size will be the same, but test ride if possible. The motor assistance means you climb faster and descend with more momentum, so handling matters more. Some e-MTB riders prefer one size down for agility on technical trails.

Q: Does frame material matter more for e-bikes?
A: Yes. Carbon e-bike frames save significant weight (1-3 kg) versus aluminium, which matters when the total bike weight is already 20-28 kg. However, aluminium e-bikes are more affordable and still perform well. The weight difference is proportionally smaller than on a regular bike.
