Gravel bikes — the fastest growing segment

Gravel bikes are the most versatile bicycles on the market. They combine the speed of a road bike with the off-road capability of a mountain bike, opening up routes that neither discipline could tackle alone. But sizing a gravel bike has its own rules — it's not just "a road bike with wider tyres".

Gravel size chart

Gravel bikes use the road bike sizing system in centimetres. The formula: frame size = inseam × 0.65. However, gravel geometry differs significantly from road.

Gravel geometry explained: stack and reach

Unlike traditional bikes where only the seat tube length matters, gravel sizing relies heavily on two measurements: stack and reach.

  • Stack: the vertical distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube. Gravel bikes have a higher stack than road bikes → more upright, comfortable position for long hours on mixed terrain.
  • Reach: the horizontal distance. Gravel bikes have a shorter reach → the handlebars are closer, giving better control on loose surfaces and reducing lower back strain.

Should you size down for gravel?

There are two schools of thought:

  • Same size as road: recommended for bikepacking, long-distance comfort and riders who spend significant time on paved roads.
  • One size down: preferred by riders tackling technical singletrack, steep descents and those who prioritise manoeuvrability. A smaller frame with a longer stem gives a sportier feel.

If in doubt, stick with your road size — it's easier to make a slightly larger gravel bike more comfortable than to fix one that's too small.

Common mistakes when choosing a gravel bike

  • Using your road bike size without checking geometry. Gravel bikes have a higher stack and shorter reach. A 54cm road bike and a 54cm gravel bike fit very differently. Always compare the geometry charts.
  • Ignoring tyre clearance. Gravel tyres range from 35mm to 50mm. If you plan to ride chunky terrain, make sure the frame clears at least 45mm tyres. Not all "gravel" frames do.
  • Buying too big for "stability". A larger frame feels stable in a straight line but is harder to manoeuvre on technical terrain. When in doubt between two sizes, the smaller one usually gives better control.
  • Not test riding with proper tyres. A gravel bike on slick demo tyres feels completely different to one on knobbly 45mm rubber. Test ride with the setup you will actually use.

Gravel bike sizing FAQ

Q: What is the difference between gravel and cyclocross sizing?
A: Cyclocross bikes are designed for 1-hour races and have a more aggressive, race-oriented geometry (lower stack, longer reach). Gravel bikes prioritise all-day comfort with a more relaxed position. Most riders need one size up in gravel compared to cyclocross.

Q: Can I use my road bike size for a gravel bike?
A: It is a good starting point, but check the stack and reach numbers. Gravel bikes typically have 15-30mm more stack and 10-20mm less reach than the equivalent road size. Some brands recommend sizing down for gravel.

Q: Do carbon gravel bikes size differently to aluminium?
A: The sizing numbers (seat tube, stack, reach) are the same regardless of material. However, carbon frames often have better vibration damping, which can make the same size feel more comfortable on rough terrain.
