Kids Bike Size Guide: Choose the Right Wheel Size |
| Talla Guía Gravel Niños Eléctrica Cuentakilómetros |
Unlike adult bikes which are sized by frame length, children's bikes are sized by wheel diameter. The golden rule for kids: both feet must rest flat on the ground while seated. This allows them to stop safely and builds confidence. An oversized bike is the #1 cause of children giving up on cycling.
| Age (approx.) | Height (cm) | Inseam (cm) | Wheel size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 - 4 years | 85 - 100 cm | 30 - 40 cm | 12" (balance / pedals) |
| 3 - 5 years | 95 - 110 cm | 35 - 45 cm | 14" |
| 4 - 7 years | 105 - 120 cm | 40 - 50 cm | 16" |
| 6 - 9 years | 115 - 130 cm | 45 - 55 cm | 18" |
| 7 - 10 years | 120 - 140 cm | 50 - 60 cm | 20" |
| 9 - 13 years | 135 - 155 cm | 58 - 68 cm | 24" |
| 12+ years | 150+ cm | 65+ cm | 26" or adult XS |
Balance bikes (no pedals) are recommended for ages 2-4. Children learn balance first, then pedalling. Kids who start on balance bikes typically learn to ride pedal bikes faster and with more confidence than those using training wheels.
Training wheels create a false sense of security — the child doesn't learn to balance. If you choose training wheels, transition to two wheels as soon as the child shows basic steering control.
