Kids bikes — safety and confidence first

Unlike adult bikes which are sized by frame length, children's bikes are sized by wheel diameter. The golden rule for kids: both feet must rest flat on the ground while seated. This allows them to stop safely and builds confidence. An oversized bike is the #1 cause of children giving up on cycling.

How to test if the bike fits your child

  • Standover test: with the child standing over the bike (feet on the ground), there should be 2-5 cm of clearance between the top tube and the child's crotch.
  • Seated test: both feet should touch the ground flat. For young children just learning, this is essential for safety.
  • Handlebar reach: the child should grip the bars comfortably without over-stretching. Arms should be slightly bent, not locked.
  • Brake reach: check that small hands can comfortably reach and operate the brake levers.

Balance bikes vs training wheels

Balance bikes (no pedals) are recommended for ages 2-4. Children learn balance first, then pedalling. Kids who start on balance bikes typically learn to ride pedal bikes faster and with more confidence than those using training wheels.

Training wheels create a false sense of security — the child doesn't learn to balance. If you choose training wheels, transition to two wheels as soon as the child shows basic steering control.

For children learning to ride, reduce the calculated saddle height so both feet rest fully flat on the ground.
